Consumers back 'name and shame' policy

The findings of a number of focus groups involving up to 58 consumers has found that consumers are in awe of solicitors and generally reluctant to complain about them.

The Legal Ombudsman is currently gathering evidence to decide whether or not it should publish its findings against the law firms and is due to announce its position on this later in the year. It recently published a press release on the subject.

Consumers were generally in favour of any findings against a firm being published but only if at least three complaints had been upheld against a firm within a year. The report found that solicitors were held in a degree of respect bordering on awe, that is awarded to few professionals other than perhaps doctors.
