What is affordable housing?
Affordable Housing is a catch-all term for schemes designed to help people get on to or move up the property ladder.
Some schemes enable the buyer to a purchase a proportion of the property while others offer financial assistance.
Where will I find affordable housing?
As part of their planning policy, many local councils require housing developers to make a percentage of their new builds affordable housing. Contact your local housing association and ask if there are any affordable housing schemes where you want to buy.
Different types of affordable housing schemes
There are four main government-backed affordable housing schemes: shared ownership; help to buy equity loan; help to buy mortgage guarantee scheme and; new buy scheme.
