An innovative trial in North Wales has revealed a new weapon in fighting dementia, toddlers.
Following a successful experiment in a North Wales day care centre, councils and retirement home owners in England and Wales are experimenting with sharing care for the very young and the very old.
Amazing results
Six pre-school children joined pensioners at a day care centre in Gwynedd and the results were “amazing”, according to Catrin Hedd Jones, a psychologist and lecturer in dementia studies at Bangor University.
Regular time spent with the children appeared to mitigate dementia symptoms in the elderly, while the children’s confidence and understanding increased.
BBC Wales and S4C will broadcast footage from the experiment later this year.
Channel 4 documentary
Channel 4 will screen a similar project tomorrow at 9pm. The documentary, Old People’s Home for 4 Year Olds, shows the impact of time spent with children on pensioners in a home near Bristol.
In both the North Wales and Bristol experiments, the impact of interaction with the young is very clear, it helps banish loneliness and depression, symptoms often associated with dementia.
